Electric Cars Pros and Cons

Last Summer (2011) I attended a local car show that featured "Green" cars.

There were high tech hybrid cars, and high efficiency gasoline powered "Smart" cars.

The cars I really fell in love with were the purely electric cars.

100% electric cars were both available and practical in the 1910s and 1920s

You may or may already know that there is strong evidence that the Oil and Gas industry killed the electric car to tremendously increase their sales and profits.

The same Oil and Gas industry that:

• Killed some really practical mass transit systems in our larger cities
• Manipulates prices to extract the maximum $$ from your pocket
• Gave us the Exxon Valdez and the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill
• Send US dollars to the mideast where some of those petro dollars fund terrorists who hate us

This show had an unrestored 1917 Milburn Electric 27L and a beautifully restored 1920 Detroit Electric Model 64 Brougham. I added the videos that you'll watch here.

So here are the Pros:

• low maintenance
• should not require much repair cost
• low operating cost
• good performance
• moderate cruising range

And here are the Cons:

• high initial expense????
• limited availability of repair shops
• finding a charging station when the batteries run low
• moderate cruising range

Not talking about Hybrid cars here

source of energy => storage batteries => electric motor => wheels

The Energy Source for Electric Cars can be:

• solar energy via solar panels
• plug-it-in-a-wall-outlet 120Volt power

The storage batteries and electric motor are determined by the manufacturer of the electric car or electric car kit
